The #1 question I hear when I tell people what I do is, “How did you go from accounting to writing?”
In 2015 I was a Tax Supervisor for a large accounting firm in Scottsdale, AZ. The firm had a pretty robust marketing department and a blog that generated a good amount of web traffic. Everyone in the firm was expected to write blogs.
I’ve always enjoyed writing, so I was happy to fire off a blog post or two whenever I encountered an interesting client story or news item. My blog posts were well-received internally and outside the firm.
In October of that year, I was browsing around on Pinterest and came across an online course, 30 Days or Less to Freelance Writing Success (<– affiliate link) from Gina Horkey at HorkeyHandbook. My first thought was “Companies will actually PAY me for that?”
I signed up for the course, thinking freelance writing would be a fun little side hustle.
Weeks later, I noticed one of the staff writers at Forbes was working on a series, The Last 10 Things I Bought. She asked readers to share stories of their recent purchases. I thought it would be fun to contribute a story and hey! I’d get my name in Forbes. Pretty cool, right? I wrote this story and the day it ran, I got a call from the editor asking if I’d like to become a regular contributor.
By August of 2016, the income I was earning from writing replaced the salary from my full-time job at the accounting firm. Today, I’m able to work from home while doing what was always my favorite part of being a CPA: helping non-accountants understand complex tax, accounting and financial topics.
If you’re in need of a professional content and technical writer, I can help with:
